Visa rules for nomads

Remote work entry pathway

Nomad Visa Income Minimum monthly income equal to four times the Portuguese minimum wage (roughly €3,280/month) for the D8 Digital Nomad Visa, open to remote workers from non-EU/EEA countries.

Nomad Visa Duration Temporary stay visa valid 1 year, or a residence visa valid 2 years and renewable.

Tourist Entry Schengen rules — 90 days within any 180-day period visa-free for most Western passports.

Business Meetings Short business trips are covered by the same 90/180 Schengen allowance; no separate permit needed for meetings or conferences.

Money

Tipping customs

Tipping is not culturally mandatory but highly appreciated. In casual spots, rounding up the bill is common; in high-end restaurants or nomad hubs, a 5% to 10% tip for exceptional service is standard.

Where to base

Nomad hotspots

Lisbon, Porto, Madeira (Digital Nomad Valley), Lagos (Algarve), and Ericeira.

Workspace

Coworking availability

Elite; an incredibly mature digital nomad infrastructure featuring massive international hubs (Second Home, LACS, Selina) and highly active expat community networks.

Cultural risk

Local taboo

Avoid speaking loudly in Spanish or assuming locals prefer it over English if you don't speak Portuguese (it can be seen as culturally insensitive). Do not discuss politics or sensitive historical topics unless brought up by locals.

Personal security

Safety index
